Zephr offers the ability to create Trials for your Anonymous and Registered users.
A trial gives a user limited access to a Feature, on a one-off or recurring basis. For example, you may offer users three free views of article content when they register. This would be managed as a trial.
This guide will show you how add Trials to your rule.
Creating a Trial in a Feature or Redirect
Trials can be used in both Features and Redirects, and are implemented in the same way across each. For this example, we’ll use a Feature rule for Articles.
Navigate to (or create) the Feature you wish to add the Trial to and use the slider to set if you’re building a rule for anonymous or registered users.
Select Access, then drag the Trials node onto your rule canvas.
Fixed Vs Rolling
In the top right of the Trials Modal, you will see options for Fixed and Rolling Trials.
Fixed Trials refer to Trials occurring over a fixed period of time, such as 10 views each month.
Rolling Trials refer to Trials occurring over an ongoing period of time, such as 10 views in the last 35 days.
We’ll highlight the differences below.
If you are using a Fixed Trial, you will first need to set up your Recurring Frequency, which is how often your Trial will reset for users.
In this section, One Off means the trial will not recur, whilst Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Custom allow the trial to reset on a recurring basis. This is helpful if you offer ‘x’ free views of content per month.
Rolling Trials do not have a field for Recurring Frequency.
Number of Views
Next, you will need to set the number of views you would like for your trial. For example, setting this to two will mean a user receives two views of article content, before seeing a different outcome.
Note: when you save the rule, and access the Trial decision point again, the meters are displayed above the Number of Views text box.
For Rolling Trials, you will also need to set a field for ‘In The Last X Days’. For example, 2 views of content in the last 10 days.
Up to a Maximum Number of Views
For both Fixed and Rolling Trials, you are able to set an upper (optional) limit for Trial usage. An example of this would be a Fixed Trial offering 2 views of content daily, but an maximum number of 40 views per month.
Enter the number of views in the left hand box, then select Per Week, Month, or Lifetime as relevant. Per Lifetime will set the total number of free views a user can get to the content covered by your Trial.
Note: when you save the rule, and access the Trial decision point again, the meters are displayed above the Up to a Maximum Number of Views text box.
Set your Trial Type. Select Unique if you would like a user to be able to read an article multiple times without it removing a trial view each time, otherwise select Page View. You can also choose to count pages with different query parameters separately.
Remaining Trial Count
Remaining Trial Count allows you to add additional outputs to your Trials node on your rules canvas. These additional outputs allow you to alter the customer journey based on the number of remaining views each user has.
For example, click Add Remaining Trial Count, set this to 1, then click Save. You will see the Trial node now has journey options for users who are In Trial, have 1 Remaining View, or whose Trial has expired.
This is helpful if you wish to show users a prompt when their trial is about to end.
Data Layer Reporting
In many cases, you may wish to report on the usage of Zephr Trials.
Zephr has the ability to push this information to the Datalayer, to be reported on within analytics tools such as Google Analytics. This data can be used to monitor the speed with which people are using their trials, or to gauge the best trial limit to offer before asking a user to register or subscribe.
At the bottom of the Trials modal, you will see a section called Data Layer Reporting.
Switch the Report Trial Usage in Data Layer toggle to on to enable reporting of trial usage. Once on, two new toggles will become visible.
Report Trial Credits Used allows you to report on the number of views/meters/credits a user has used from their trial. For example, in a trial of five, if a user has viewed three pages, the credits used would be three (3).
Report Trial Credits Remaining allows you to report on the number of views/meters/credits a user has remaining from their trial. For example, in a trial of five, if a user has viewed three pages, the credits remaining would be two (2).
Toggle these options to on, based upon your requirements. Once on, a section to input a data layer key will display.
This key will determine the information written to the data layer, in the format of
key: value. As there is the ability to add many trials per user within Zephr, we recommend you develop a custom naming convention to use.
For example, if you have a recurring trial offering registered users ten views per month, you could call this key
registeredMonthlyTrialCreditsUsed to specify the number of views a user has consumed.
Repeat this for each option as necessary, then click Save.
Connecting Your Trial
Once your trial is on the canvas, connect it to the rest of your rule accordingly.
The In Trial output should be connected to the outcome users should see when they have access to trial views – most likely the ‘Show Content’ option.
Remaining Count outputs should be connected to Outcomes users may see when they have access to trial views, such as an ad within the article.
The Trial Expired output should be connected to the outcome users should see when they have finished their trial – most likely a paywall or data capture form.
